Since the World Cup ended, we canceled our cable and have spent this last month of the summer catching up on movies and documentaries on DVD. It turns out that the library has a lot more going for it than I had remembered, and not just the fetching book restocking gals. So the majority of my social and media intake has come via this route, or through… social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.). It’s been hit or miss.

But it has felt like there has been a theme developing…

I remember Sean Penn getting upset for the Academy Award for Best Actor award a few different times over the years, most notably for his role in I am Sam in 2001. I also remember that he finally won the award in 2008 for the film Milk, so I figured it was probably worth watching. It turns out that the movie is based the true story of the first openly homosexual elected official in the city of San Francisco in the 1970′s. The acting was nothing to get excited about, but I found myself really engaged in the story.

A film about the discrimination of homosexuals? Hmmmmm….

Sometime this summer, I caught part of an interview with Colin Firth on NPR’s Fresh Air mid-day program. It was the type of interview that has you sitting in your car for a few minutes after arriving at your destination, just waiting for something to break your interest free. He was speaking mostly of his motivation and experience in playing the title role in the 2009 film A Single Man. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to see this film for myself, my interest being piqued from the interview. While the cover of the film just shows Firth in the foreground, with a woman nuzzling his neck in the background, I didn’t know what to expect from the movie, other than this character being single, or (gulp) becoming single. This time, it turns out that Firth’s character is a closeted homosexual man, struggling in seeming solitude over the sudden death of his long time boyfriend.

A film about a homosexual man grieving the loss of his lover, with fear of judgement and persecution from society? Hmmmmm… Maybe there is a pattern forming here.

Penn and Teller have a controversial show on Showtime, designed to challenge and frustrate the status quo. They take many cherished and popular ideas and beliefs, examine them, and then finally pronounce them as B.S. One episode recently took the Boy Scouts of America to task for discriminating against homosexuals and atheists. The basic premise of their argument was not that discrimination was never acceptable, just that organizations that are government funded should not do so. It’s a fair point, and one that led me into a nice little debate on Facebook with some Christians who were appalled by President Obama’s choice to appear on the view instead of at the Boy Scouts’ 100th Anniversary Jamboree.

Christians wanting the President to support an organization that openly discriminates against homosexuals? Egads! The stars are beginning to align!

As I scoured the T.V. series shelves for the next season of Penn and Teller’s B.S., I came across an interestingly titled show called One Punk Under God. It’s a six episode reality show, documenting one eventful summer in the life of Jay Bakker, son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker. It was a pretty riveting series, with several intriguing and fascinating story lines. In keeping with the theme of my summer, Jay (who is a preacher at a church in Atlanta) is grappling with the issue of homosexuality and the Christian church. If he goes with his heart, and announces a complete acceptance of homosexuals into his church. None of this “love the sinner” language. We’re saying that homosexuality is not a sin. Jay’s apprehension of fallout and the actual fallout are worth the time it takes to watch this show. I highly recommend it. In fact…

God has told me that homosexuality is a beautiful form of love between two people and that the church needs to reconcile it’s beliefs to reflect this! All the signs point to this! It has to be true!

This was confirmed for me when a friend from bible college posted this video by America’s Best Christian, explaining the biblical view of marriage.

Click here to view the embedded video.

I shared it on my Tumblr feed, and it subsequently garnered 300 times more attention than my next highest tumbl. (Really? Neil Patrick Harris posting a self picture with a double rainbow gets no love? If you still don’t know about the double rainbow, click here. Whatever. I digress.) So what if that was only 300 notes? It was a big deal to me.

You know how sometimes it seems like fate/destiny/the universe/God is really trying to get your attention with something by bringing it in front of your face over and over and over again? It almost feels like some sort of invisible hand is trying to give you a “sign” that you are supposed to acknowledge? Well obviously I’ve been having some of that lately, and it all came to a head this week, with the revocation of Proposition 8 in California that had previously banned gay marriages.

Does all of this sound a little fishy?

This is the part where I confess.

I should admit that I don’t believe in these cosmic signs some sort of transcendent meaning. Well, I guess I do believe in the transcendent meaning part, except I believe it to be completely a psychological phenomenon based on the function of the reticular formation of the brain. We give things meaning, and then they seem to jump out of the bombardment of stimuli that we see, hear, and smell as we live our lives. We decide that something is important (even at a subconscious or barely conscious level), and we start to see it everywhere. We make all of this transcend everything else we experience.

If you give a crap about civil rights in general or homosexual rights in particular, your feelers start to tune in to anything and everything that could help to inform or fortify your opinion. At least, that’s what my summer has been filled with. Every summer needs a theme. This is mine. Love who you love, and I will support you.

Every wannabe wordsmith has a shoehorn in the toolbelt

I often get my words confused. I am prone to becoming drunk with the potential power that the right words can provide to the right prose. Communication is all about pictures, and the emotions that those pictures bring to us. If a word creates a certain picture in your mind, and it turns out that you got that word wrong in the first place, it can be quite difficult to amend that picture.

For me, that word is often times: aficionado.

The cause of this confusion is probably due to the contents of the magazine Cigar Aficionado. It’s pages were filled with words like veiny, nutty, full-bodied, and other descriptions of cigars that might as well been written in Icelandic. Because I could not be sure what all of these words referred to to, or even meant, I assumed that one needed to be an expert in order to enjoy such a magazine. With that, I concluded that the word aficionado surely referred to some sort of professional knowledge holder or wise sage (in terms of cigars in this case).

In actuality, aficionado is really just a synonym for fan. Seriously, look it up. No word from Facebook if they considered replacing “Become a fan” with “Become an aficianado” before settling on the “Like” button.

Being an aficionado of LOST

I adore LOST. I ridiculously love it. I’ve shared my love of LOST with so many people, I am practically an evangelist for it. I literally named my daughter Evangeline, not just because she was “good news”, but because I wanted a significant way to acknowledge the impact the show has had on my life (my wife was also smitten with the beauty of the name, but that’s a minor detail).

The pilot episode of the show was eyeball-widening intense; with big-budget, high-quality special effects, terrifying moments of near-death and actual death, convincing pathos in many of the characters, and probably most important of all: plenty of mystery. A giant man-chomping monster, a mysterious radio signal on a loop for 16 years, and a polar bear running through the forest. They were all WTF moments at their head-scratching finest.

But the biggest mystery of pilot, and the one question that was begged by the title itself, was whether or not these people would be found. Would they eventually get off the island?

All of these holes in the story created a huge gravitational pull for me to lean in, to continue watching, and to hope beyond hope that everything would turn out OK. But my hopes were not just fed by the new illumination of the continued narrative each week… my imagination ran wild with possibilities and theories of “the truth”. In those dark places, where certain details of the story had not yet been told, I could hardly stop myself from coming up with reasonable and not-so-reasonable solutions to the puzzle.

When the finale of the third season of the show turned out to be a flash forward, giving us a glimpse into the future, the found question of LOST… was finally answered. The gap in my mind was filled with “the truth”, but somehow I still wanted to know more. I was still leaning in, I was still watching, and I was still hoping that everything would turn out OK. I cared about the characters. I cared about the minutiae. I cared about all of it.

As the show was drawing to a close earlier this year, I felt myself dreading the new gap that was imminently creeping up in my own life: a world without LOST. Gaps and holes are fine, as long as there is a starting point, and a finishing point. Open-ended questions can be maddening and neurosis inducing. Although life before LOST was wonderful and fulfilling, the idea of never hearing that spooky title frame sound left me close to despondent. Beginning a gap that never ends is like a death.

When the show finally did come to a close several weeks ago, a number of people were disappointed. While everything did turn out OK for the main characters, some fans did not appreciate the final 15 minutes, which seemed to imply a sort of do-it-yourself spirituality, in which any and all religious or spiritual belief eventually leads to a self-created place of paradise. Other viewers were stunned by the fact that a large number of questions (holes and gaps) went unanswered. Many of these folks were disappointed to find out that a specific element of the story which was particularly meaningful to them, was ignored or poo-pooed away.

Personally, I was extremely satisfied with the finale. Although I had my own theories along the way, and I had my moments of jubilance when I happened to be “right” with one of my predictions, I was prepared to be happy no matter what. Somewhere along the way, I had given up the reigns to my enjoyment of the show. I consciously relinquished my role as an objective viewer, and became a homer for whatever the writers put in front of my face to enjoy. My love was blind, and I didn’t care where it let me. Whether the gaps were filled or not, my mind was set, and I was determined to enjoy all of it.

So, as future without LOST has now become a present without LOST, you may not be surprised that I don’t believe that it is really over. My mind gave the world of LOST considerable meaning to me, and that same mind cannot let it go. I don’t want to believe that it is over. The endless gap that started at the culmination of the series is unacceptable for me to suffer.

Since much of the value of LOST during it’s run was subjective and self-created (like the postmortem paradise of the finale), why can’t I manufacture my own hope for the narrative to continue?

So that’s what I’m going to do. When the DVD and Blu-ray come out with special features that fill in the gaps, know that I will be elated. When the new, interactive internet story begins, know that I will be giddily following along. And if none of this ever happens, and it truly is over, know that I still believe that it was all worth it.

I may not be an expert, but I am an aficionado.

Are you?

I’ll see you in another life, brotha.

But, Steve Nash is at the World Cup, and he is actually letting me go with him. Albeit through his video camera as he is a special correspondent for …CBS Sports. Huh? CBS Sports is known for two things: college basketball games, and uninspired NFL broadcasts. It’ is not a kind phrase, but they really are the poor man’s sports network. I would not consider myself a fan. I would not press the “Like” button.

However, in an apparent effort to broaden their appeal beyond white guys from the midwest, CBS Sports has hired America’s favorite international (South African born, Canadian raised) white guy to report on the goings on at the World Cup. Well, it’s not really reporting. They just want him to do funny videos with them like the ones on my link above, or this one that he did with Amar’e Stoudemire:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Maybe they are hoping that it will be the Steve Nash Effect in action outside of basketball. He seems to bring out the best in others, and perhaps he is doing the same thing with CBS Sports.

Here is the last video that he made himself just before teaming up with CBS Sports:

(If you just watch one of the videos in this article, watch this one. It’s the shortest and the best by far.)

For some reason, his videos with CBS Sports don’t have the same type of pop that his other videos have.

As I watch these, I want to laugh and be engaged in the spirit of the video, but it’s just not happening. I’m a ridiculously huge Steve Nash fan, and an even bigger World Cup fan, but the mixing of the two has not been a recipe for success. The CBS Sports curse brings Steve Nash down a couple of notches in the funny department.

Oh well, he’s back in America now for his charity soccer match on June 23. I’m sure that Steve will find his touch with the video camera again soon.

Just to show that not all of these grapes are sour, I will leave you with the one video that did actually have me laughing out loud. Enjoy:

Most soccer (football) fans have already seen the new Nike Football commercial featuring Drogba, Cannavaro, Rooney, Ribery, Ronaldinho, and Cristiano Ronaldo. I know that you want to see it again, so here you go:

Click here to view the embedded video.

I’ve watched it myself about a dozen times over the past couple of weeks, sharing it with as many people as I can think of. It’s just fascinating to think that gods and goats can be formed on the pitch in a matter of seconds. If Zidane’s header off of Buffon’s glove in the 2006 Final would have struck home, we would be telling our children about the spectacular honor we had to have been able to see the greatest player of a generation, in his finest moment. Instead, the save was made, Materazzi disparaged his sister, and Zidane left the pitch and his shot at immortality on the table.

Without a doubt, my favorite scene in the Nike commercial is Wayne Rooney’s flash forward into a bleak future, where his errant past has caused the end of his professional football career, the collapse of the British economy, and the continuance of the fatalistic dread that England’s fans have become so comfortable with every four years. As he steps out of his pikey trailer (Snatch reference?) at about 1:15 in the video, the guitar driven rock song in the background takes a crazy twist, with some melodic yodeling. Somehow, it fits perfectly with the vibe of the song.

My first thought was that the artist singing was Matisyahu, the Hasidic Jewish reggae star. Yes, you read that correctly. A lot of his songs have a type of yodeling vibe to them, and he is as good of an international music intermediary as anyone else, right?

Wrong.

In Nike’s quest to Write the Future, they took a page directly from the past. The band is from the 1970s, by way of the Netherlands, and they called themselves Focus. The name of the song is “Hocus Pocus”, and if you think that the Ocarina of Time is a magical instrument, wait until you see the rock flute. Seriously, just check this guy out. It’s bizarre and hypnotizing. It may just change your life.

Click here to view the embedded video.

I’m not sure who looks more ridiculous:

or

What a way to start the Cup.

Rock on, rock flute.

I love my mother.

They are both dedicated, loving, and hard-working women. They both inspire me every day to live up to the love and care they have given to me, so much more than I deserve.

One of the few areas in which they are deficient in, is their hip-hop music prowess. For that, I offer the following video to help them develop their inner gangsta-chick through the rest of 2010. Enjoy the Toyota Family singing: ”The Swagger Wagon”.

Even though I may not be able to make a sailor blush, I’ve been known to run a blue streak with my mouth from time to time. Most of the time, it has been a moment of anger that would inspire an outburst of coarse or profane language from my lips. But, with my close friends, I felt comfortable enough to let a few s-words and f-bombs fly in the midst of regular conversation.

I can vividly remember the first time that I said “Goddamnit” in Matti’s basement, with my friend Ryan glaring at me in silent horror. At the time, I felt shame and regret, but that didn’t stop me from arguing about the word’s relative evil or sinfulness compared to the others that we threw around as teenagers. Most of the other swear words or put-downs that I employed in my youth didn’t seem to have much to do with the situation or people that I inflicted them on. There wasn’t a real victim in my choice of language (other than my own vocabulary and the object of my malice, of course). It wasn’t as if a proctologist would wince every time I said “a–hole” without regards for the literal definition of the word.

Not a lot has changed in my foul-language patterns since that time. I’m not a saint, and my angry moments can still stir up the more colorful part of my tongue.

However, there is one word that has always given me pause. It’s not just speaking it that bothers me, it’s hearing it as well. In fact, it’s been almost 20 years since I used the r-word (retard) in a derogatory way.

Corky and the family from "Life Goes On"

I’m not sure why this word offended me so deeply, like the n-word. I didn’t have a close friend or family member that was retarded or developmentally disabled in some way. My closest relationship to anyone with a mental retardation was Corky from “Life Goes On“. I don’t say that in jest. I have always had an unusually close relationship with television characters. I have kids named Kiefer and Evangeline. I understand that it is a little odd, but it has always been an easy way for me to relate to the rest of humanity.

Nonetheless, when anyone would say the r-word, I would immediately imagine Corky standing next to me, turning to me, and asking the question: “Is that person saying that there is something wrong with me?” This imaginary friend of mine helped me to keep my lips sealed from uttering the r-word in that context ever again.

During my sixth grade geography class yesterday, we somehow began a discussion about the r-word. I asked the students if anyone had a family member who would be considered retarded. A student raised his hand and shared some details about his uncle. I explained my thoughts on the r-word and the lack of tolerance that would offered in my classes in regards to that word.

We talk about meaningful topics quite a bit, but this seemed different. They were silent. Pensive. It was a powerful moment. I could almost see the wheels turning in the minds of my students as they considered the potency of that word in their own vernacular.

Last night, I noticed that Sarah Palin has taken up a campaign against the usage of the r-word. Although it may have started out as a political move to draw attention to White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s use of the r-word in reference to liberal democrats, the point is well taken by Republicans and Democrats. It brings to mind the uproar caused by President Obama on the Tonight Show last year, captured in this CNN.com article from spring of 2009.

Political motivation aside, I actually agree with and commend Mrs. Palin for her stand against this word. Kudos and cool points to her on this.

In less than a month, on 03-03-10, an organization is gearing up to spread awareness about ridding the world of the r-word, or at least as it is all to commonly used right now. This group is an offshoot of the Special Olympics. Their website is www.r-word.org, and even features an “r-word counter”, where you can see how often your favorite websites have used the r-word (Disclaimer: www.zacparsons.com was proudly r-word free before the publishing of this article.). There are resources of how to get involved in the quest to “Spread the word, to end the word”.

Of note, there is a video of John C. McGinley (Scrubs) giving a talk to a group of elementary school students about using the r-word.

Click here to view the embedded video.

I’ve stopped using the r-word for a long time now. I’d be proud and encouraged if you chose to do the same. What do you say?

Tuesday Newsday has been a fun idea over the last several months. Some of the stories struck a nerve (Roman Polanski, Jon and Kate), while others just struck a thud (Jasmine Fiore, Super Memory). Either way, the discipline and rhythm of searching the news for topics to write about was a healthy one, often exposing me to stories and details that I would not have discovered otherwise. I guess the same is true with many repetitive tasks when viewed in hindsight: even though it didn’t always “feel” like what I wanted to, I still grew in a way that I value now, because of it.

My wife and were doing one of those repetitive tasks last night… Re-watching episodes of LOST. (What were you thinking?)

Before starting that though, we saw that a new episode of “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” was in our queue. Now, it’s is one of those irreverent shows that isn’t afraid to discuss touchy topics. Some episode titles include: The Gang Exploits a Miracle, Charlie Gets Molested, Charlie Wants An Abortion, and Dee Is Dating a Retarded Person. Not exactly dinner conversation topics in most households, but in the midst of the “shock”, there was some “awe”some moments of true humanity and hilarity. (Did you see what I did there? I kill me!)

Now into its fifth season, the show has added more episodes each year, and the quality of those episodes has waned considerably. With most of the humor of last night’s show revolving around the destruction of property, poisoning rivals, and public urination, my wife reached her breaking point, saying: “I’m done watching this show, if you want to keep watching it, you can do it without me.” While I’m not ready to give up on the show completely just yet (e.g. the last season of Scrubs was a renaissance of the brilliance that filled the first four seasons of that show), I think I understand why the show has sunk.

Instead of a creative force in the show that says: “We have something to say, let’s try to say it in our own way”, the situation morphed into: “Holy crap! We have x number of shows to do this season, we have to say something!” In a lot of ways, Tuesday Newsday has become like that for me. To tweak the parental mantra about mean-spirited talk: If I don’t have anything useful to say, then why am I saying anything at all?

If you will permit me another pop culture reference (we’re up to five right now), it reminds me of the 1994 movie, Airheads. In the film, because they have taken a radio station hostage, a rock band becomes wildly famous and is even offered a record deal, because of the attention given to them. The record company executive signs them without even listening to their music. I don’t remember the exact context, but the lead singer Chazz, (Brendan Fraser) alludes to the record just being filled with the drummer Pip (Adam Sandler) farting on a snare drum. Pip’s response: “I ain’t farting on no snare drum!” has stuck with me ever since, and pretty much sums up what any worthwhile endeavor can become if the circumstances around it cease to be conducive to it’s creative inception.

Even a beast of a sentence like the last one can sound pedantic if I’m just trying to say something in an interesting way, when I don’t have much to say at all. (For another example of this, just re-read the previous sentence. Seriously, who says “pedantic”?)

Just as Jemaine knew when it was business time, seeing that it was Wednesday, so I knew it was time to pontificate about some news item with sunrise each Tuesday. I had created a machine that demanded me to have something to say, even if the content wasn’t inspired. Let’s be honest… sometimes I was just farting on a snare drum.

Now, I feel more comfortable writing about things, when I actually have something to say. There may be the occasional link-jacking where I just want to post something that really needs no commentary or introduction, but I don’t want to write just for the sake of writing. If you are taking the time to read this, then I want to take the time to write something worth reading.

Interestingly enough, in the episode of LOST that we watched last night, the creator and star of “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”, Rob McElhenney, made cameo appearance that my wife did not remember from the first time she watched the show. ”Hey! It’s Mac!” she said with a happy smile. Apparently, the end of her relationship with the show didn’t leave her with hard feelings about everything related to that show. I’ve gotta say… I love this woman.

Wow. Each turn with this saga gets more and more odd. If you’ve followed this story for a while, you’ll know that Jon’s comments to the media are mostly informal, off the cuff, on usually on his own terms when he is feeling generous with his time. Other than the chair interviews on Jon and Kate plus 8, there have been very few formal video interviews with him, sharing his own thoughts on the matter. Last night, Jon showed up on Larry King to reveal his news on pulling his children off of the new “Kate Plus 8″ show, among other things. Here is a clip:

Click here to view the embedded video.

It’s hard to know what Jon really wants out of all of this. Even though this is a video interview, and we are actually getting our information “from the horse’s mouth”, it still feels less than genuine. You can almost see his lawyer’s hand reach into Jon’s back and making his lips move. I smirked when his lawyer could not even remember the name of the show. You’ve got to wonder how many times Larry King has watched the show himself.

It was surprising that his lawyer didn’t slap Mr. Jon Gosselin when he paused after being asked about how much money he made last year. It’s responses like that (implying that he does not make enough money) that make you want to throw up. But he does sprinkle in some other commentary that makes you want to pat him on the back. Taking responsibility for his actions is a positive step. There are many people who will never admit to a mistake. I appreciate his honesty in sharing that.

I believe him when he says that he’s had an epiphany and that he cares for the welfare of his children. It’s harder to believe that he told the TLC that he wanted to quit a long time ago for the sake of his children. Especially with quotes like this from Kate from a corresponding CNN.com article saying she was:

“saddened and confused by Jon’s public media statements.”

and

“Jon has never expressed any concerns to me about our children being involved in the show and, in fact, is on the record as saying he believes the show benefits our children and was taping on Friday with the kids.”

It’s tough to see these two parents, who used to share a bed together, having to communicate to each other through media outlets and press releases.

A lot of anti-Jon sentiments have been put forth about about his recent playboy lifestyle and his womanizing ways, calling him a loser, a cheater, and a poser. If his latest feelings are to be believed, (that he regrets his behavior, made mistakes, and wants to befriend Kate and work out his marriage), will people forgive him?

Many of the negative comments about Jon that I have heard have added a prescription for what he “should” be doing. Namely, stop production of the show, stop all of the high profile womanizing, and work out a situation for his family that is in the best interest of his children. If he indeed does this, will those same people support him?

Are comments of criticism meant to redeem Jon into some sort of redemptive behavior? Or are they just mean-spirited and judgement, and a way to feel better about oneself for not experiencing the same moral failures? Basically, will the public shackle Jon to his past? Or will they support him into the future as he exemplifies approved behavior? What do you think?

Last night, during their show, Jon and Kate Gosselin announced that they would be separating immediately. They interviewed separately, and had some different things to say about what they thought the future might hold. After the video played, which was presumably filmed before Monday, text popped up on a black screen saying: ”On Monday June 22, 2009, legal proceedings were initiated in Pennsylvania to dissolve the ten-year marriage of Jon and Kate Gosselin.” This is not the same as a separation. This is a divorce.

TLC does not allow video embedding, so you can watch the announcement on youtube here.

It was difficult to watch, and the tone of the show has changed entirely. Instead of marveling at the resilience of these two people who committed to raise 8 children in a home of love and support, it has morphed into a soap opera where verbal darts are thrown back and forth from the couple. Some miss, others hit painfully hard. It seems as if they are in a sort of competition with each other, where neither of them wants the other to be happy. Jon’s earrings, Kate’s hair and (ahem) cosmetic surgery, the sprawling new home, the special trips and visits from celebrities… they have done so many things to try to be happy and make their children happy. But, as it is now tragically obvious, neither of them is happy, and they are now on the path to legally end their marriage.

Kate seemed legitimately at a loss for what had happened. To her credit, she displayed real vulnerability and despair for what was happening. Judging by how strong she acts in almost every situation of her life, I don’t believe that she was asking for pity or trying to play the victim. Jon did not seem pleased with the decision either, although he was less emotional and appeared more calculated with his words.

As someone who has gone through this, I wanted to reach through the screen and just hug both of them. In the irony of ironies, I watched this episode with my ex-wife, who happened to need a place for the kids to sleep due to a power outage in her neighborhood. It brought us together to view the show, and talk about our similarities to their situation. She was able to help me see Kate’s perspective and pain, and even give hope to what may come next for Kate… true introspection, soul searching, and reflection. Both my ex-wife and I have done much of this over the past several months, and our cordial relationship for our children’s sake is turning into a true friendship again.

I’m not sure what will happen with Jon and Kate, but I can say something now that I haven’t been able to say until recently: reconciliation is possible. The behaviors that let to the deterioration of our marriage, if not changed, would lead to the deterioration of our next relationship or marriage. We both believe that these changes are for the best, regardless of if it returns us to a state of togetherness. Our time apart has removed many of the scotomas in our lives that prevented us from seeing who we truly are. We are looking at our future with new eyes, and with new hopes.

Will we make it? It’s tough to say. We will be starting counseling together right away. We will continue to live in separate houses. But, with hope back on the table, who’s to say that it’s not possible to find love again? Not me. Not anymore.

My ex-wife and I followed this show from it’s beginning about 3 years ago. Up until the point when we separated, we had seen every episode. There were so many things about Jon that I related with, and things about Kate that my wife could relate to. They had 2 pregnancies, and ended up with 8 children. TLC found their story fascinating, and did a 1 hour special on them as the sextuplets turned one. They did a follow up episode as the kids turned two. The response was so great, that TLC suggested a regular series. Because they had so little time to create home movies with all of the diapers, clothes, food, and life going on around them, Jon and Kate agreed to invite the cameras into their lives, and document what it is like to raise twins and sextuplets.

Last night, on the premier of the new season, Jon and Kate publicly acknowledged that their relationship is mostly over, and that divorce seems to be inevitable. This clip illustrates so clearly how far the two parents have grown apart and how much they are both hurting. The scene from 3:30 to 4:28 especially broke my heart.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Jon probably cheated on his wife. You can see it on his face and on hers. It is a painful situation that I know only too well. The exact details of his affair aren’t as important as the fact that is marriage is seriously unhealthy. Message boards have filled up with people taking sides and talking about how Kate should drop him and move on, or how Jon was acting out in response to Kate’s controlling personality. We can’t know. It’s so complicated, they may not even really know why they do what they do. I’m still baffled almost daily at my own behaviors based on what I say I believe in and who I want to be.

One of the main reasons that the show was so popular, was the near constant tension between Jon and Kate. How they would fight and argue, only to come back together at the end of each episode with his arm around her on the couch, recapping everything and making up. I can vividly remember an episode where they go on a ski trip in Utah, and Jon is absolutely thrilled with the freedom to ski by himself. Away from the family, away from the kids… just himself and the slopes. His life was not balanced. He saw his opportunity for freedom, and he took it. I fear that his life away from Kate won’t give him the balance he seeks either.

This clip from the show has old home movies of their engagement and better times. It’s sweet to see them with such love and positive sentiment override for each other.

Click here to view the embedded video.
I have hope that they can find peace and happiness again, and that their children will share it with them.

For me, I am seeking to be the man that my wife once saw in me. Not for her, but because it really is who I can be. Who wants you to succeed more than your spouse? She was right to have high hopes for me. I will never be perfect, but with practice, I will become more Godly. I think that everyone would be on board for that.
